Promote Healthy Lifestyles

By providing more opportunities for increased physical activity and better eating habits, we can help Orange County residents stay well.

Greater Physical Activity

Kids with Yoga BallsWe know that moving more reduces obesity and improves health and fitness. To reverse the epidemic of obesity, we must increase opportunities for children and adults to incorporate physical activity in their daily lives. This may include participating in sports, joining a walking club or spending less time in front of the TV.

  • Solutions in Action: Healthy for Life/PE4Me is an innovative health and fitness program that addresses the epidemic of childhood obesity through its no-cost, school-based intervention model. The program is facilitated by registered dieticians, fitness instructors, and physical education and general education teachers.

Healthy Food and Beverage Choices

Availability and access to nutritious food options is a key ingredient in eating well. Healthy eating can be difficult in neighborhoods punctuated with fast food options on virtually every corner. By working within schools, neighborhoods, healthcare settings and after-school programs, and partnering with local businesses, we can increase healthy food and beverage options and make selecting nutritious foods easier.

  • Solutions in Action: In collaboration with “Healthy Eating Active Communities” partners, Latino Health Access worked with a local supermarket chain to implement “Viva La Salud.” The program provides consumer education on maintaining a traditional Latino diet while preparing food in healthier ways. Stores promote specials on “100 Healthful Products” and offer free health screenings.

Nutrition Education

Stronger education and messaging about food and nutrition help children and adults make healthy decisions. Orange County’s diverse communities each have unique values, needs and characteristics, requiring specifically tailored programs and services.

  • Solutions in Action: Dr. Riba’s Health Club provides nutrition education to parents, children and caregivers in a variety of unique venues, including nutrition classes for parents, "Nutrition with Mommy” classes and preschool class demonstrations.
