My column in the Faith and Values section of the Orange County Register last week marks my 50th opportunity to shine the light on our extraordinary local nonprofit sector.  These columns have allowed us to feature more than 80 local nonprofits and their leaders, allowing them to tell their stories, provide perspective on their clients, and inspire readers to take individual and collective action to address our community’s greatest needs.

A nationally-recognized leader in higher education, Dr. Mildred García was appointed the fifth president of CSUF in June 2012, during a time of significant challenges to the state’s higher education system. Before joining CSUF, she served as president of Cal State Dominguez Hills, where she was the first Latina president in the Cal State University system.

An epidemic is sweeping across Orange County, driving our residents to overcrowded and expensive emergency rooms, causing them to miss work and lose precious income, forcing missed school days for young students, and preventing treatment that could avert catastrophe.
